[0001] [001] The present invention relates to an apparatus for coupling a panel such as a glass panel to an adjacent support structure such as a pole. In particular, the present invention relates to a clip for a glass panel. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] [002] Panels made of glass and / or other materials are often used in architectural applications in which they need to be supported by adjacent structures, but the fixing to the supports is preferably carried out by stapling the panels in fittings that are attached to the structures.
[0003] [003] Glass panels are widely used in combination with adjacent structures in the form of stainless steel posts, as these elements share characteristics of aesthetic appeal, strength, resistance to corrosion etc. The fittings used to secure the glass panels to the stainless steel posts generally include two parts that are molded and / or manufactured from solid stainless steel. The two parts can be attached to the adjacent post (for example, with screws) and can be joined to staple the glass panel between them.
[0004] [004] Solid stainless steel glass panel clamps require large amounts of expensive material, especially if the stainless steel needs to be resistant to corrosion and / or resemble the appearance of adjacent high-quality stainless steel structures. In addition, solid stainless steel glass panel clamps have rough edges when removed from the molds into which they are cast and need to be sanded and polished - usually by hand. Solid stainless steel glass panel clamps need to be manufactured - at a significant cost.
[0005] [005] Instead of solid stainless steel castings, some hollow stainless steel castings are used for glass panel clamps, but these clamps do not have adequate strength for most applications, such as to pass legislative application tests. of metallic fenders.
[0006] [006] As an alternative to expensive stainless steel castings, glass panel clamps were manufactured with polymeric materials that are chrome plated, but these clamps generally have lower strength in strength and are also perceived to be of inferior quality.
[0007] [007] The present invention seeks to provide a cost efficient yet strong and attractive means of fixing glass or other panels to adjacent structures. The present invention seeks to provide cost-effective glass panel clamps that can pass legislative testing of metal fenders and that can have the appearance and durability equivalent to high quality solid stainless steel glass panel clamps. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0008] [008] According to the present invention, a fitting is provided which comprises:
[0009] [009] - a first clamp body that defines a first clamping formation and a first clamping opening; and
[0010] [010] - a second clamp body that defines a second clamping formation and a second clamping opening;
[0011] [011] in which the aforementioned first and second clamp bodies are shaped and dimensioned in such a way that, when they are abutted, with the first and second fixing holes aligned, the first and second clamp bodies form a combined body that defines a recess between the first and second clamping formations;
[0012] [012] in which each of those mentioned first and second clip bodies comprises a composite of plastic materials covered by a pressed stainless steel cover.
[0013] [013] Each of the clamp bodies can define more than one clamping formation and / or more than one fixture opening.
[0014] [014] The pressed stainless steel covers can extend around the outer periphery of the combined body, separated from the recess and a surface of the combined body that is shaped to touch an adjacent structure such as a pole.
[0015] [015] The pressed stainless steel covers can define openings that are aligned with the fastener openings and can be spaced around the mentioned openings. At least one of the mentioned recesses can have a non-circular shape that is complementary to a fastener.
[0016] [016] The composite plastic material may include a heat shrink material such as nylon, fiber reinforced, such as fiberglass. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURES
[0017] [017] For a better understanding of the present invention and to show how it can be accomplished, the present invention will now be described by means of non-limiting examples, with reference to the attached figures, in which:
[0018] [018] - Figure 1 shows a view of all components of a glass panel clamp according to the present invention;
[0019] [019] - Figure 2 shows a plan view of the glass panel clamp of Figure 1, in use; and
[0020] [020] - Figure 3 shows a sectional view of the glass panel clamp in Figure 2. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURES
[0021] [021] With respect to the figures, a fitting in the form of a glass panel clamp according to the present invention is generally indicated by reference numeral 10 (and is generally indicated simply as "clamp" below).
[0022] [022] The clamp 10 includes two bodies 12, 14 which are made of a composite plastic material, for example, a heat shrink material such as fiber reinforced nylon such as fiberglass. Each of these bodies 12, 14 defines a squeeze formation in the form of a recess 16 in which a soft compressible pad 18 is received, with complementary nails 20 over the pads fitting the complementary recesses 22. In addition, each of the bodies 12 , 14 defines two fixing openings 24.
[0023] [023] The first and second clip bodies 12, 14 are shaped and dimensioned in such a way that, when they touch and their respective fixing openings 24 are aligned, form a combined body, which defines a recess 26 between the pads 18 and which is in recess with respect to a base 32 of the combined body, to form a partially cylindrical recess.
[0024] [024] The part of the second body 14 which is in contact with the first body 12 includes a central elevation part 28 and studs on both sides of the elevated part and these formations are received in formations complementarily molded in the first body. A fixing opening 34 extends through the raised part 28 from the recess 26 to the recess in the base 32.
[0025] [025] The clamp also includes two covers 36, 38 that were pressed from a stainless steel plate. Each of the covers 36, 38 extends around the outside of its associated body 12, 14, such that the covers extend around the composite body, separated from recess 26 and the partially cylindrical recess in base 32 of the body. Each of the covers 36, 38 also defines fixing recesses 25 which align with the fixing recesses of bodies 12, 14 when the clamp 10 is mounted.
[0026] [026] The first cover 36 defines recessed conical formations 40 around its fixation openings 25 and the second cover 38 defines hexagonal recesses 42 around its fixation openings. When the clamp has been assembled, fasteners such as screws with recessed heads can be passed through openings 25, with their heads received in recessed formations 40 and with their threads protruding into hexagonal recesses 42. Complementary nuts (preferably blind nuts) can be received in the recesses 42 and the screws can be fixed to the nuts to keep the covers 36, 38 and the bodies 12, 14 together, although the heads and nuts are flush with the external parts of the clamp 10, without any bad appearance bulge. The clamp 10 can be used with a series of other fasteners, with corresponding recesses in the covers 36, 38 - preferably with a non-circular recess to prevent unwanted rotation of the fastener with respect to one of the covers.
[0027] [027] During use, when a sheet of glass 44 or other sheet material needs to be fixed or secured with respect to an adjacent support such as a vertical cylindrical post 46, the second body 14 is attached to the post by means of a fastener 48 that extends through opening 34. In Figure 3, a fastener in the form of blind screw 48 is shown, but a wide variety of fasteners can be used. The first body 2, the pads 18 and the covers 36, 38 are positioned in relation to the second body 38 and the covers and bodies are fixed together with screws that pass through the fixing openings 24, 25. The glass sheet 44 is inserted into the recess 26 between the pads 18 and the screws are tightened to press the bodies 12, 14 together - in order to narrow the recess 26 and tighten the glass 44 between the pads 18 (the pads 18 are made of a material sufficiently soft, such as polyurethane, to ensure the compression loads are distributed on the glass 44 and to reduce the likelihood of cracks in the glass). Depending on the circumstances, the screws may first be loosely attached and then tightened once the glass 44 has been positioned, or the clamp 10 can be fitted after the glass has been positioned.
[0028] [028] The stainless steel plate from which the covers 36, 3 8 are pressed is very durable and the continuity of these plates on the outside of the clamp 10 has the result that the clamp resembles a solid stainless steel clamp on the appearance. In addition, clamp 10 can be produced at a fraction of the cost of a solid stainless steel clamp. Additionally, the internal formations of the bodies 12, 14, including the recesses 16, 22, the openings 24, 34, the raised part 28, nails 30 and the parts on the first cover 12 which are complementary to these parts, can all be molded during the manufacture of bodies 12, 14 and do not need to be manufactured at substantial cost - as would be the case with solid stainless steel clamps.
[0029] [029] No major marking results from the formation of covers 36, 38 from the stainless steel plate and the markings can generally be removed with high efficiency for their cost with vibration polishing.
[0030] [030] Despite not protruding over the outside of the covers 36, 38, the heads and nuts of the fixing screws that pass through the openings 24 apply their compressive forces over the outside of the covers, which are regularly distributed in the generally rigid covers and they are applied to the glass panel 44 by means of the softer polymeric bodies 12, 14, which distributes the compression loads. In the event of extreme forces applied to the clamp 10 and / or the panel 44, the hard covers 36, 38 combined with the bodies 12, 14 compressed together form a body with sufficient strength and stiffness to withstand forces exerted on the clamp 10. In addition Furthermore, the flexible and soft nature of the bodies 12, 14 acts as a shock absorber or shock absorber and assists in the distribution of forces within the clamp 10 to avoid stress concentrations on the glass 44 and to prevent mechanical failure of the clamp. Samples of clamp 10 have passed destructive tests established by South African legislation for metal fenders and, similarly, clamp 10 is expected to meet or exceed similar requirements in other countries.
[0031] [031] The weight of the stainless steel plate used for covers 36, 38 is relatively small for each clamp 10 and, as a result, represents a relatively small part of the costs incurred in manufacturing the clamps. As a result, high-quality stainless steel can be used in covers 36, 38, providing a clamp 10 that is highly resistant to corrosion and that has to be of appearance, durability and perceived quality equivalent to neighboring high-quality accessories - efficiently for its cost.
